Forest of civilizations
The project “Forest of Civilizations” was historically the first of its kind in the world. It was at Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, that a globally unique 6,500-year-old subfossil forest was created, telling the story of the development of our planet and human society as a whole.
The entire forest was composed of rare subfossil trunks from the Czech Republic, each dedicated to one national pavilion of Expo 2025. Each trunk was subsequently named after its respective nation.
Thanks to the thousands of years of history encoded in the tree rings of these ancient trees, the forest-true to the spirit of Expo symbolically connected the entire world into a single “root system,” one organic entity.

With this in mind, the Expo welcomes the consideration of ‘life’ not just for human beings but also in a broader sense of diverse creations and nature that surround humans.”

As of March 12, 2026, Subfossil Oak officially concluded its participation in Expo 2025 within the “Forest of Civilization” project following the official handover of the allocated site back to the Expo Association.
The total costs incurred in connection with the project’s participation in Expo 2025 amounted to EUR 11,682 000. All related obligations have been duly settle.
