Discovery of the ancient “forest”
An ancient forest
installation featuring world unique 6,500-year-old subfossil oak trees, with each tree dedicated to one participating nation of the Expo 2025. Each tree will be name after “its” nation. With thousands of years of history encrypted within the annual rings of these venerable trees, they will symbolically connect the entire world within one “root system”, one organic entity. As a first-hand witnesses to the time of the formation of the first civilizations, they narrate – year by year – the story of the development of our planet, and along with it the story of the humankind.
“Japanese culture has long been based on the belief that any material, all living creatures – even a pebble along the road – have an inherent life in them. With this in mind, the Expo welcomes the consideration of ‘life’ not just for human beings but also in a broader sense of diverse creations and nature that surround humans.”
